When The Vampire Diaries first introduced Stefan Salvatore seven seasons ago, he was the “good brother.” He was the hero to Elena’s heroine, and he had the hair to prove it. But over the seasons, he’s had his ups and downs and the occasional ripper binge that forced him to take off the hero label, if at least for a season.

But with Elena gone, Mystic Falls in danger, and Caroline around, it seems Stefan has once again found his place as the show’s hero, and for Paul Wesley, it’s not quite as exciting as playing the ripper. When EW was on set, we talked to Wesley about Julie Plec’s recent statement that Stefan is “putting back on the hero hair” this season.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
