‘Overwhelming public support’ for new Suncorp Stadium plan
More concerts at Suncorp Stadium could soon be approved.
A proposal to permanently increase the number of annual entertainment events to 12 gained “overwhelming public support” in a recent government survey.
About 81 per cent of residents backed the plan following a two-year trial.
Premier Steven Miles has also thrown his support behind the proposal.
“I certainly want to see it stay,” he said.
“When we built the stadium, there was significant concern from the neighbourhood, but what we’ve seen since then is the people of Paddington and Milton have really embraced Suncorp Stadium.
“They love it now. I know people who live near there love the concerts, love the games, love the shows and want to see more of them.
“Certainly, if that’s what the public wants, we’ll be keen to give it to them.”
The Department of Tourism and Sport told Brisbane Times it was yet to decide if it would proceed with approval.
“[We] will now consider feedback from the public consultation before any decisions are made,” a spokesperson said.
It comes ahead of significant renovation plans for the venue.
“Suncorp Stadium will be upgraded before the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Queensland government investment in the stadium will enhance the visitor experience ahead of and during the Games,” a spokesperson for the Games Venue and Legacy Delivery Authority (GVLDA) told Brisbane Times.
“The detail of the scope and timing of the works is being developed by the Games Venues and Legacy Delivery Authority and will be ready for government consideration in the first half of 2025.
“GVLDA will work closely with Stadiums Queensland to ensure key stakeholders, tenant clubs and user groups are consulted throughout the process.”
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has also backed the plan to increase concerts.
“There’s definitely demand,” he told Brisbane Times in August.
“We know there was great disappointment when we couldn’t get Taylor Swift to come to Brisbane.
“It’s great to see the state government now considering a permanent increase in the number of events … because, ultimately, this is something that the community is wanting, this is something that’s in demand, and it also brings a major economic boost to the city.”
