Starting today, fans ages 13-19 can vote once each day per category for their favorite TEEN CHOICE 2013 “Wave One” nominees at www.teenchoiceawards.com. Host(s), performers, presenters and additional nominees will be announced soon.

Though most big events on The Vampire Diaries tend to end with blood, tears and a body count, executive producer Julie Plec says she wanted the group’s graduation to be an emotional milestone in the CW series.

“We did really want our characters to be able to graduate and have that moment that I loved so much growing up watching other TV shows where teenagers finally hit that milestone,” Plec previews.

“We get a little bit of both. We get the s–t hitting the fan behind the scenes, but we still get a great glimpse of that nostalgic milestone. These characters, even though some may say they never go to school, I’d say they worked pretty hard to get to this point! It’s a real nice moment, and I always get a little misty-eyed when I see it. It makes me happy.”

And because Plec and the TVD writers room are so awesome, they’ve gifted us with Mystic Falls’ graduating class of 2013′s yearbook—quotes, superlatives and all!

After spending four years with the actors and characters, Plec admits that writing “Graduation” was “a really wonderfully emotional” experience.

“[Coexecutive producer] Caroline Dries and I sat outside my house in the backyard with the breeze blowing and the sun shining and, over the course of two-and-a-half days, split it up and wrote it and shared scenes and acts. It was the easiest time I’ve ever had writing a script because I was just so happy to be writing. Four years, you have to remember—you go to high school for four years, you go to college for four years and then you move on,” she says. “But we just hit that wonderful milestone in the series where we’ve known these characters for four years, and they feel like friends and family, so to be able to write this great finale for them felt really special. In a weird way, it felt almost like series finale, though it wasn’t obviously. We both put that kind of heart and soul into it because we felt like it was that important.”

Four vampires, one witch-ghost and one human-as-apple-pie quarterback graduating from high school? Only on The Vampire Diaries! The CW hit’s beloved characters are all set to receive their diplomas and toss their graduation caps up in the air…all while dealing with some serious supernatural craziness going down in the season-four finale on Thursday night. You know, just another typical day in Mystic Falls.

We chatted with executive producer Julie Plec about the season four finale, including Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) “bittersweet sacrifice,” Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline’s (Candice Accola) future now that he’s off to headline The Originals spin-off and Elena and Katherine’s Dynasty-style fight that was years in the making! Plus, will Elena and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) sire-bond come back into play when she makes her choice between the brothers?

Elena’s Choice, Take Two: While season three’s finale also featured Elena making a choice between the Salvatore brothers, Plec previews that our heroine isn’t the same human girl who chose Stefan (Paul Wesley) just before dying and coming back as a vamp. “I think that in last year’s finale it was very clear that Elena was struggling with feelings for both brothers and needed to make a decision about what she wanted her life to be and who she wanted to share that life with,” she explains. “This year, she’s had a very traumatic roller coaster of life experience and it’s changed her irrevocably—and at the center of it all was the diehard belief that she loved Damon, that she loved him more than she’d ever loved anyone.

She continues, “Her struggle has been with the realization of the sire bond that she couldn’t even trust those feelings to be true. So it’s more about answering the truth of those feelings and as a result does that mean her distance from Stefan was also not real and not true? She handles that realization pretty well and it’s a great, great, great scene.”

Last year may have marked the end of The Twilight Saga, but the vampire phenomenon is alive and well on the small screen thanks in part to The Vampire Diaries (CW, Thursdays). At the center of the bloodsucking hit is Paul Wesley, who plays a 165-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore.

As The Vampire Diaries gets ready to wrap its fourth season, Wesley, 30, talked to PARADE about his role on the show, his heartthrob status, and more.

On playing undead.
“My favorite part about playing Stefan is when he gets to explore his own darkness. I really enjoy finding flaws in the hero, and I think Stefan is the hero of the story in a sense. I love finding his faults and what makes him tick. I definitely prefer the dark Stefan.”

On becoming a pop culture phenomenon.
“I had an idea it would take off the way it did because I knew that vampires were very popular, and I knew of [creator] Kevin Williamson’s work, so I had an inkling that this would do well — I just didn’t know just how well!”

On filming in Atlanta, Ga.
“It is really hard work. It’s a lot of night shoots and grueling schedules, so levity is definitely something we need every once and awhile in order to make it sustainable. There’s definitely a lot of silliness that ensues on set!”

On his on-screen brother (and off-screen friend) Ian Somerhalder.
“We’ve become really good buddies. I know every single thing about him on every possible level. I’ve never done a television series for this long, and it’s kind of like the longest relationship you’ll ever have — other than my family and my wife. I feel like I know the good, the bad, the ugly, and the great about everyone in the cast — and they can say the same about me!

On his heartthrob status.
“To be honest, I think its endearing and sweet, but I don’t really think about it too much.”

On what he wanted to be as a kid.
“Hockey was my first passion and my first love. I wanted to be an ice hockey player, but I got into a little bit of trouble and got kicked off the team. I started looking for something else to do, and that’s when I got into theater. I don’t know if I ever saw myself making it a profession, but I definitely think that by the age of 18 I figured out that I would do this for the rest of my life.”

On finding time for his first love.
“I get out on the ice every once in awhile and play hockey —definitely in the winter time. I like doing winter activities. Sometimes I’ll go home to New Jersey and play a couple of pick-up games. I don’t get to do a ton of it in Atlanta. I’m sure there’s an ice rink somewhere, but I don’t get a lot of time with filming. I think its one of the best sports out there. I miss it. I miss being a kid and having ice hockey being the most important thing in the world!”
